I'm moving to Epsom in a few weeks and have just found out you can't use it for travelling to and from London. So where the hell can you use it? The Oyster website was really no help, I didn't understand at all, and I'm really confused and worried about travel now. Thanks.

Ok, the Oyster card works right across the London transport network.

Here's the map of all the rail and tube network covered by the Oyster card.

As you've discovered, Epsom station lies just outside the network: the very next stations (Ewell East and Ewell West# are inside Transport for London's zone 6.

However, London's buses -- also included in the Oyster system -- *do* run as far

as Epsom.

Assuming that your nearest station is Epsom itself, you will need to buy a Southern Railway season ticket. You can buy one which covers all London transport zones so it works just like an Oyster once you're into London.

It only costs a little more than a zone 1-6 Oyster travelcard. Compare the costs below.

Southern Railways London All Zones Travelcard from Epsom =

£58.30 (1-week card); £223.90 (1-month card)

Oyster Travelcard for zones 1-6 (out as far as Ewell East) =

£53.40 (1-week card); £205.10 (1-month card)

Hope that clears things up for you. =)

It would make sense if Epsom station were included in zone 6 (or poss zone 7) of the TfL fares area because it's a common interchange station, but until that happens the nearest Oyster card compatible station is either Ewell West or Ewell East, which are both just over 1 mile from Epsom town centre within TfL zone 6.

With an Oyster card you can use TfL bus routes 406, 418 and 470 from Epsom. The 418 takes you past Ewell West station and the 470 takes you past Ewell East.

Epsom is just outside te London travel zones . The Oyster Card can be used on the Underground, buses, London Overground, National Rail, Docklands Light Railway and trams within the London travel zones 1 to 6 and 1 to 9. The distance these zones stretch from central London are very erratic. For example Epsom just 16 miles from central London is outside the zones. Amersham 28 miles from London and Grays 23 miles from central London, are in Zone 9. A further inconsistancy is that although you cannot use the Oyster on trains to and from Epsom, you can use it on buses 406 and 418 serving Epsom, as these are Transport for London services to and from Kingston which is within the London zones. You should be able to get a London rail map from Epsom Station showing the zone boundaries. What you can do from Epsom is to buy an Epsom to London Zones

1 to 6 daily, weekly or monthly Travelcard which will cover the rail services between Epsom and London Victoria and Waterloo and most of the Underground system, all red buses etc. You will need a passport size pgotograph to buy your first Travelcard - not required for one day cards
