What are the chances. Very low. Not impossible but very unlikely.

Usually you wouldn't get much if any snow in the London area in December, but you can never be dogmatic about the British weather - December 2010 was very snowy, the worst for 18 years, but what are the chance that we'd have two successive Decembers like that?

January and February are the snowiest months, but you can get flurries of snow in nearly any month.

Even the most sophisticated computer models can only predict the weather accurately a few weeks ahead, so it's far to early to predict what the weather will be like on one specific day in December, let alone what the chances are of a particular flight on that day being delayed or canceled due to the weather.

Our weather is notoriously unpredictable. Nobody can forecast accurately more than a few days ahead. However, statistically, it's very unlikely that Heathrow will be affected by snow on December 12th.

Winter UK

December

As ever at this point of the forecast confidence does tend to slip away, so please bear this in mind...

At this point in time the first month of winter is expected to continue in a similar vein to November in terms of the overall setup with the northern blocking continuing. Subtle variation on that theme means that currently the expectation is that the month as a whole will be slightly cooler than average with rainfall close to the normal for the time of year.

You'll need to keep a check on the above site because it will be updated as time passes and more weather info becomes available.

Bear in mind that what the link is saying right now is that temperatures in December will be 'below the seasonal norm' which might indicate snow.

If snow is likely at LHR on 12th December and you have time, you might be able to switch to another airline and arrive/depart at/from another airport here in UK which is not snowbound.

Take my advice. UK does not know how to deal with snow. Our normal weather is for short sharp cold snaps from late December into late February or early March. Snow is not common, but when it does snow, we do not know how to deal with it. Bring on the Canadians.

The coldest months in the UK are January and February. Snow in December is rare but has happened (as had snow in November).

Weather systems are unusual though, for example today in the UK, it is very warm, there are people walking round in short's a T-shirts, I travelled into work with my coat in my bag because it was too warm to wear it (it's a thin water resistant top). it's 25 degrees Celsius (77 Farenheit) currently and is predicted to get slightly warmer.

Highly unlikely (although we did have snow around 18th December last year - a lot in fact. But everyone was shocked to see it.

I hope we don't for your sake. As the other answerer said, we don't handle snow very well in the UK.

Snow normally falls around that time of late in England/Britain. Britain can't handle snow. But seriously, with the British weather - you never know.

We got told we'd have one of the hottest summers ever.. well that didn't happen.
