I'm DYING to go to London this summer to visit some friends, but I've heard there have been bombs intercepted in Europe and there is hostility towards America in London. Is this true? Would it be safe for me to travel to London this summer? In general, how safe is it for Americans to travel to England or Europe right now...or in July??
Thanks! :)

Erin,

I wouldn't worry about it--statistically, the most dangerous part of your trip is going to be getting to and from the airport here in the US.

Most of the people who seem to have trouble with hostility towards Americans are 1) people who end up somewhere there are a lot of young people drinking (think pubs in a bad part of town), 2) people who go over to England and can't understand why some things aren't done the "right" way, and 3) people who can't understand why Europeans don't bow down to our superiority, and might actually tell us we're wrong about stuff.

I'm absolutely proud of my country--I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. But when I'm traveling, I remember that I'm a guest, and I try and act like it.

Well London is as safe if not safer than a big city in the US I'd say in terms of the potential for a terror attack, and the same for most European capitals. I have never hard of any attacks aimed specifically at American Tourists, in terms of hostility towards Americans not too the extent you would notice let alone have any problems we aren't always that keen on your politics but that is a different matter but apart from that maybe some friendly banter or rivalry in the same way you might have with a Canadian etc, there are thousands of Americans living and working in London alone and 10s of thousands more who visit each year. I hope you decide to come and see for yourself and I hope you have a great time.

It's safe. England is great for tourism and aside from pickpockets (keep your awareness around you!) you don't have much to worry about. Trust me on this. I've been there 15 times in 23 years, including many times in the days before or after terrorist attacks from the IRA in the old days and immediately after 9/11, and shortly before the 7/7 subway attacks. I also left there shortly before the PanAm plane bombing in 1988. I survived all of it, because I was never in the wrong place at the wrong time. Most tourists aren't in the wrong place at the wrong time.

You can freak out about it or you can go and have the time of your life like I have many times now. Take your chances and go. It's an amazing place. If it's your time, it's your time. Do you want to spend your life saying "I didn't go because I was scared?" Honestly, it's been worse than now for tourist worries there. I can see worrying about a trip to Somalia, but it's London you're talking about. Londoners aren't troubled much, nor should you be.

It's as safe as anywhere. I live in London and there are no problems at all. The average Londoner will be interested by your accent (as I know Americans are by mine!) Remember that any press stories you hear are only one offs - London is a HUGE place, very multicultural, so don't let a few tiny stories put you off when there are 8 million of us living our lives with no problems at all.

The only one thing you might get is that you might be perceived as LOUD! I understand and appreciate it but some Londoners won't. The basic point is that the press can easily make anything look worse than it is. Come here and enjoy!

nowhere is safe - life is a terminal illness - but it's no less safe than where you live. In fact it is probably safer. Better to intercept the bombs than let them get through...

Yes it would be safe for you to travel to the UK right now or in July.

It'll be perfectly fine to visit, I've been around London many times at all times of day and had no problems in terms of crime etc, so don't worry, and enjoy your visit! :D

They would say it's safe so they cummmm and spend your money,

Then after you spent it,

they will say:

it is unsafe because of you
