I'm booking a flight to London and the price is pretty much the same when flying into Gatwich or Heathrow. I'm staying with a friend who lives in Kensington. Which airport would be more suitable/closer or is there really much of a difference?

Heathrow is marginally better because it is closer to central London. You can take the Underground (subway) from Heathrow to West Kensington,South Kensington Station or High Street Kensington depending on which part of Kensington your friend lives in. www.tfl.gov.uk

Gatwick is double the distance from central London but the journey time is identical. Take a Southern train from Gatwick to Victoria (Cheaper than the Gatwick Express). They run 4 to 5 times per hour and the journey takes 33 to 36 minutes. Transfer on to the Underground at Victoria

It's really a question of 6 and 2 threes, i.e there really isn't that much difference. It's probably marginally slower from Heathrow to the nearest stop on the Underground for where your friend lives in Kensington. Also, you would be travelling in a normal London Tube train which is less comfortable (IMO) than the main line express stock you would travel in from Gatwick to Victoria. You don't say where you are coming from, but you might find immigration quicker at Gatwick.
