I would join the people who are recommending Cambridge rather than London. It is small enough to find your way round easily; people will generally be a little nicer to you because London can be a bit TOO harsh and cosmopolitan; it is more picturesque than London; and it will be a bit cheaper to live there. I think you will have a nicer experience than in London, because if you are by yourself, London can feel very big and daunting, and it's a bit more difficult to make friends in that situation.

I would recommend Cambridge rather than London - and that you check with the National Union of Students - for advice on accommodation and other matters.

You refer to "leave alone" rather than "live alone" - which suggests you might struggle a bit with English - and might therefore be well advised to register with the NUS.

If you are doing a research project for a few weeks - you would obviously want to be based mainly in the appropriate area in which you have easiest access to source

details, etc. Transport contacts - London/Cambridge - are OK but I think you'll find Cambridge a much better (and safer) place to reside.

I have a relative - Professor of Jesus College - who I'm sure would povide any more specific information you might need - and I also have a very good Italian friend !!!

So please feel free to e-mail me with any further queries.

Your ultimate guess is by practice! something by highway could nicely be tortuous- the two getting out from or into London! yet are you particular you like to head back and forth? Why waste your existence traveling nowhere particular, once you should be spending a similar time doing some thing greater sensible and relaxing? And what approximately your very own Carbon Footprint? Why no longer stay/ artwork in Cambridge and week-lead to London? Cambridge isn't the tip of the Earth you already know! human beings are fairly civilised up there! Alternately, why no longer artwork in London- fairly you need to discover some thing to do there? don't be so hide-sure- stumble on existence a splash- it particularly is relaxing!

Cambridge has a great studying atmosphere and in any case is only 50 minutes away from London by frequent train, so you can easily make day trips.

Cambridge is a lovely town. London might be too big for a first time all on your own.

Good luck!
