Well I will be having a visit to London in a month or two so as a Hat-Freak I would love to buy a top hat from London!

The thing is that I don't know the way around and I don't think that each hat store ( vintage or new) would have a web site that I could find.

I'm looking for a hat store in shorts which sells top hats, ones that are either beaver or silk. (Also atleast 6' tall) What I mean by ideal price is ofcourse nothing past 100-150 dollars maybe.

Anyone who could help this boye find himself the ideal top tall top hat he is looking for?

Lock & Company can certainly supply high quality top hats, but your price range is on the low side. A new hat will be considerably more. They may be able offer you a used or refurbished one in your price range. Why not ask them ? If you don't ask, you don't get, and the dollar-pound rate is in your favour at the moment.

Address:-

Lock & Company,

6 St. James Street,

London, SW1A 1EV,

United Kingdom.

Telephone :- +44 207930 8874.

E-mail :- sales@lockhatters.co.uk

I hope that this helps.

Edit :-

This is not intended to be a criticism of another responder, but it is worth noting that the Stationmaster of Carlisle Station wore a top hat up until his retirement in 1966.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I think you will really struggle to find a genuinely good quality top hat in that price range. They are hand made items, and so are generally around the £250 (about $530) mark at minimum.

There are some very cheap (under $30) unstructured felt "fashion" versions available but they are not serious hats and if you enjoy owning hats, you would be embarrassed to own one of those.

If you are prepared to buy second hand, it is possible to find very good deals on the genune thing on ebay, but that rather defeats having a souvenir of London I suppose !

If it is any consolation, I assure you that it actually highly unusual to see a man wearing a top hat on the streets of London and it has not been part of a British gentleman's normal daily wear for about 150 years! They are sometimes still worn for very formal occasions, weddings and the odd horse racing meeting, but those are the only times you will ever see one.

However, you may find the website of Christys, a world famous British hat manufacturer, interesting:
