The nearest to you would be in Ruislip - Park Wood, Mad Bess Wood, Copse Wood, Bayhurst Wood, all in the area between Ruislip and Northwood. All together it's probably the second biggest area of woodland in Greater London other than Epping Forest. You can also enjoy Ruislip Lido and its miniature railway around the lake. From Ruislip tube station, bus H13 will take you to Ruislip Lido, and the 331 will take you further up the road through the woods though there are no stops in the woods themselves - get out at Reservoir Road. Both go from the stop at the far end of the station approach road.
While we're on the subject of the attractions of Ruislip, if you also like nicely kept gardens, not far away is Breakspear Crematorium. The 331 stops outside - it's the stop before Reservoir Road. Go at a weekend and there are no funerals but the grounds are still open. This is also worth knowing about if you plan to drive to the woods, because the crematorium car park serves as an overflow from the Lido car park at weekends.

Buy the Ordnance Survey map for your area. It has everything - woods, rivers, lakes, public footpaths, pubs.
