Question:
Does anyone know what the country code and area code is for calling London from Australia?
2007-06-19 18:58:16 UTC
My friend is living in London and I only have her phone number. I bought a prepaid card that I can use because I will only pay 1.5 cents a minutes. The card says to dial 0011 + country code +area code + phone number. Could you please tell me the country and area code I should dial. Also I heard they are 8 hours behind. Is this correct?

The UK code is 44 and the London area code is 20.

You should find the number is eight digits so you need to dial

0011 44 20 xxxx xxxx

The time difference at the moment from Sydney is 9 hours. Other parts of Australia will be different.

Danechip gives a common, but wrong, reply. The correct answer is: Dial 011 (international access code in North America, 00 is for Europe and most of the rest of the world, but not Australia or Japan) Dial 44 (country code for the UK) Dial 20 (area code for London, when calling from within the UK, dial 020) Dial the EIGHT digit local number, which starts with either 3, 7, or 8. (If you are calling from a landline within London, you just need to dial the 8-digit number). All this "0207" and "0208" confusion arises because London used to have seven-digit local numbers and two area codes 0171 for inner London and 0181 for outer London (earlier 071 and 081). When the areas were merged into 020 the 7 and 8 were added to the front of the local numbers, and the 3xxx xxxx series numbers have since been introduced because they were running out of numbers. Some people are still stuck in a seven-digit local number mindset, but the fact remains that if you just dial seven digits within London, you will not get through. If you are calling a mobile phone in the UK from Canada, dial 01144xxyyyyyyyy where xx is 75 through 79 - mobile phones have 11 digits starting 075 through 079. Calling from abroad, you dial the whole number except for the leading zero.

0011 is the international prefix used to dial somewhere outside of Australia.

44 is the international code used to dial to U.K..

20 is the local area or city code used to dial to London.

X is the local number you wrote. Exchange X with your number

Danechip is wrong the area code for London is 020 or 20 if calling from outside the UK. From Canada younosygit is correct. Londoners still sometime class their number of 020& or 0208 (sometime 0203) but the code for London is 020 followed by an eight digit local number. If code starts 07 then it is a mobile phone and you need to be careful as the cost for calling a mobile in the UK is borne by the caller not the owner of the phone.

just be careful your friend hasn't given you their phone number with the london area code included - for instance I would give people my phone number as 020 xxxx xxxx - IF that is what your friend has done then do not dial the 020 bit again

So using the information already given to you in the posts above to dial my number from Australia you would leave out that 020 and would dial - - - 0011 44 20 xxxx xxxx
