Luton is not in London, it is in Bedfordshire. Whey they call it London Luton is beyond me. Let's say your flight arrives on time at 12:25. You then have to disembark, wait for luggage to be put on the carousel, collect it, clear customs and exit the airport. In my experience, this takes a minimum of 1 hour.

So you get on the Heathrow express (every 15 minutes) so lets say you catch one straight away at 1:25. You arrive at London Paddington Station at 1:40pm.

You then need to buy a tube ticket to London Kings Cross St Pancras. You can go via the circle line or the Hammersmith and City Line.

If you have luggage, allow extra time as there are stairs at the station. This should take around 30 minutes but I'm adding on 5 minutes for you getting off the Heathrow Express, running to the tube, buying a ticket and running down the stairs.

This gets you to Kings Cross St Pancras station at 2:15. St Pancras is a walk from the main underground station, follow the signs (again, there are stairs but escalators in the station). Arrive at St Pancras at 2:20.

There is a train at 2:30 which goes to Luton Airport Parkway, arriving at 2:50.

You then need to change trains for the East Midlands service to Nottingham at 3pm, getting to Luton Airport station at 3:06.

You might want to book your tickets in advance as there are often queues at St Pancras for tickets, you can purchase a through ticket to your destination.

Once you arrive at the station at 3:06, you then have to walk to the airport and terminal building for departures. You should arrive at your check-in desk at around 3:15.

Depending on where you are flying to from Luton there is a minimum check in of 1 hour (boarding starts 45 minutes before flight leaves) so assuming you have factored this in and you can run very fast and no trains are delayed you just might catch it with luck on your side.

However, this is a very very tight schedule and I would not attempt it myself and I know London very well. Don't be tempted to get a cab as London traffic is awful and an hour later you will still not even be out of London. I would seriously look at travelling home by train if you can. There are express services to most major cities and from London Euston to Manchester it is only 2 1/2 hours.

As other respondents have said, it is cutting it very fine, but you could get a direct coach from Heathrow central bus station (Terminals 1-2-3) to Luton Airport, service is 707, and journey time is 1 hour and 10 minutes. In my experience the journey time estimates are pretty reliable. There is a departure at 1310 which arrives at 1420 to meet your deadline - they run every hour at the same times from 0610 to 2310 (but 0810, 1610 and 1710 departures take longer).

You need to book in advance to be sure of a seat - see the first link.

I would not attempt the journey with those time parameters

Your friend arriving at Heathrow Airport will have to make their own way to meet you via LU Piccadilly Line to King's Cross St Pancras and national rail to Hatfield. This will take them about 1.5 hours in total and cost £13 or 33% off with a rail discount card. The National Express coach you mentioned takes about 1 hour to reach Hatfield but only runs every 2 hours and costs over £20 Then, because there is no bus/coach connection from Hatfield to Luton Airport (according to the Traveline website) you will both have to either (1) book a taxi to take you to Luton Airport or (2) take a bus from Hatfield town centre to St Albans main railway station using any one of the following bus route numbers 300, 301, 620, 621, 724, T5 which take roughly 20 mins and then board one of the 4 trains per hour from St Albans to Luton Airport which takes 20-30 mins and costs £6.50 each or 33% off with a rail discount card

It's tight, but there is hope by coach!

Depart 1410 Coach Heathrow Airport, Heathrow Central Bus Station, Stand 1 Take National Express Airport Coach 787 towards Cambridge (Passengers should pre-book tickets to travel on this service) and get off at Luton Airport, Airport Bus Station, Bay 4 (on Luton Airport), arrive 15:20

If you don't arrive at Heathrow until 12.25, then you won't do it. The journey between the two airports takes a minimum of two hours. .

You're cutting things very fine.

Get to Heathrow at least an hour earlier.

Then you'll have better options to allow you to complete the journey.
